School Committee · Meeting of October 15, 2026
DEDHAM — The Dedham School Committee's Budget Subcommittee voted 3-0 to recommend a fiscal 2028 capital budget forward to the full committee. Members Rodriguez and Mahalka joined the chair in backing $700,000 for an Oakdale Elementary roof replacement and a roughly $6 million fire detection system replacement at Dedham High School. Dr. Kelly, presenting the plan, said the existing high school alarm sometimes "will trip and it will not notify us," while Mahalka noted fire-watch costs of $1,000 to $1,200 a day could equal "roughly 15 years" of the project's price tag.
Kelly said the system would not be operational until fall 2029 even with prompt approval. An initial motion mislabeled "FY27" was corrected and re-passed 3-0 as the FY28 budget before the meeting adjourned.
